Fat Client Interface
A fat user interface performs as much processing as possible locally for a remote service. It involves designing the visual interface, ensuring the usability of features, creating the screen designs and integrating into the communications framework. The result is a highly responsive tool that is good for desktop applications.
Java Swing applications are fat clients. Java Applets and Web Start applications are too, once downloaded.
